I’m sitting at the bar at a place around the corner from my friends’ place eating dinner. Last week someone walked in the door and shot his ex-girlfriend who was also sitting at this bar. He also shot the doorman and then was killed by the police.
There’s a melancholy hanging in the air. Where there was an easy, irreverent sense of community before, now people are having civilized conversations. Everyone at the bar (except me) are regulars. People like me come in to have a drink/bite to show their support but every time the door opens, all eyes are drawn to assess the person entering.
When I walked into the alley towards the entrance, the (new) doorman went out of his way to make eye contact, smile and say “hey”.
